We are very excited to share that we have recently adopted a beehive!
As part of our research into our recent blog post ‘5 Simple and Easy Ways to Support British Bees This Summer‘, we discovered that the British Beekeeping Association run the scheme where you can ‘adopt’ a beehive in your local area. We were keen to get involved so have adopted a beehive of our own and a lovely box of goodies recently arrived for us to say thank you!
Included was a jar of local honey, a Burts Bees lip balm, a packet of wildflower seeds for the garden, along with lots of information and top tips to help support British Bees! We’ll also get updates on our beehive which we’re really looking forward to . It’s such a simple way to help such an important cause and it only costs £36 a year. You can read more about the scheme here.
There are two beekeepers in the Midlands (the scheme local to us), Jules and Gill, and they will be sending us updates from their hives. Obviously this year has been an unusual one weather wise – the longer winter meant spring blossom and fruit trees flowered very late. I can’t help but wonder the impact our very hot summer will have had on the beehives. Hopefully a good one!
Here are some of the really interesting things we’ve learnt from the scheme (so far!)
- Around one in three mouthfuls we eat is dependent on insect pollination – a fascinating statistic!
- There are very few wild honey bees in the UK – so it’s vital we support the role of beekeepers to safeguard honey bees for future generations
- The three best ways to provide more pollen for your local bees is to learn to love weeds (clover and dandelion are very important sources of food for honeybees), grow single-petal flowers like daisies (as it’s often easier for honeybees to access the nectar and pollen) and to plant flowers in bright colours like white or yellow (as this makes it easier for the honeybees to find).
We are so proud to support the British Beekeeping Association to undertake the vital work they do, not least because our Bumble Bee range is so popular with our lovely customers.
